Starting Sunday (January 4), travelers on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will see a 4% increase in tolls, marking the 18th consecutive year of toll hikes. The increase, effective on the mainline and Northeast Extension, raises the per-mile rate from $0.07 to $0.073 and the segment fee from $1.09 to $1.13, as reported by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
For passenger vehicles, E-ZPass users will see their most common toll rise from $1.86 to $1.94, while Toll By Plate customers will pay $3.88, up from $3.72. Class-5 tractor trailers will experience an increase from $23.16 to $24.12 for E-ZPass and from $46.32 to $48.24 for Toll By Plate users, according to NBC Philadelphia.
The toll increase is part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission's ongoing effort to repay debt under Act 44, which has required the commission to contribute over $8 billion to statewide transportation projects since 2008. The commission plans to continue raising tolls through at least 2051 to meet these financial obligations, as noted by PhillyVoice.
Looking ahead, toll increases are expected to decrease to 3.5% in 2027 and 3% by 2028. Despite the increases, the PA Turnpike's E-ZPass rates remain below the national average for toll roads. Travelers can use the PA Turnpike's online Toll Calculator to plan their expenses.
