A water emergency occurred on Esopus Creek near Washington Avenue in Kingston on Thursday (January 1). The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office reported that law enforcement and fire department personnel were on the scene after receiving a report of people in the water behind Dutch Village Apartments around 4:50 p.m.

Authorities issued a public safety announcement urging anyone with family members or acquaintances who were in the area and had not returned home to contact the police immediately. A subsequent social media post from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office included a photograph of an individual near the water, wearing a yellow cap, gloves, a dark jacket, and camouflage pants, whom they were attempting to identify.

Despite efforts, including divers searching the water on Thursday evening, the search yielded no results. The city of Kingston and town of Ulster police, along with the Kingston and Ulster Hose fire departments, responded to the scene to assist in the emergency operations.
