President Donald Trump believes he will be impeached if Republicans fail to hold control of Congress in this year's midterm elections, per NBC News.
On Tuesday (January 6), Trump spoke to House Republicans at a policy retreat in Washington, where he warned GOP lawmakers about his possible impeachment.
“You gotta win the midterms, because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be — I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” Trump said of Democrats. “I’ll get impeached.”
The midterm elections in November will determine control of all 435 seats in the House and roughly one-third of the Senate. Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the House, and losing one or both chambers would shift political power to Democrats, who could use majority control to advance investigations or pursue impeachment proceedings.
Trump’s remarks came as voter sentiment shows considerable dissatisfaction with the direction of the country, particularly on economic issues, less than a year before the elections.
Trump is the only U.S. president to be impeached twice. During his first term, the Democratic-led House impeached him in 2019 on charges related to his dealings with Ukraine, and again in 2021 over the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. In both instances, the Senate voted to acquit him.
At Tuesday's retreat, Trump urged unity within the GOP and stressed the importance of advancing his policy priorities in the coming months.
