Starting next month, food stamps in Louisiana will no longer be allowed for the purchase of candy, soft drinks, or energy drinks.

The new rules about how Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits can be used in Louisiana will take effect on February 18th.

State health officials say the changes are intended to encourage healthier eating habits without raising the cost of groceries or cutting the dollar amount of SNAP benefits.

Gov. Jeff Landry says the move will help reduce obesity and diabetes.
