New data reveals a significant surge in flu cases across New York's Capital Region, with Albany County reporting 486 cases during the week ending December 27. Saratoga County followed with 472 cases, and Schenectady County reported 318. Since the flu season began in October, there have been 239,000 flu cases statewide, and hospitalizations are on the rise.

According to the Times Union, over 4,500 New Yorkers were hospitalized with the flu in a recent seven-day period, marking the highest number ever recorded in a single week. This surge is putting a strain on hospitals across the state, with Glens Falls Hospital reporting near-record levels of patients with respiratory illnesses, including the flu. The hospital has implemented a mask requirement for all patients, employees, and visitors as of January 1.

New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald noted that the type of flu circulating this season is known to cause more severe illness. He emphasized the importance of flu vaccinations, particularly for individuals with underlying health conditions like heart disease, asthma, and diabetes.

As flu cases continue to rise nationwide, health officials urge people to take precautions such as getting vaccinated, washing hands frequently, and staying home when sick. Those seeking a flu shot can find a clinic by visiting vaccines.gov.
