Grand Haven in need of new waterlines

The city of Grand Haven, needs over $50 million in infrastructure repairs, according to a recent report presented to the city council. The report highlights the urgent need to upgrade roads, water lines, and sewers, which are showing significant wear and tear. The most pressing issue involves the city's aging water distribution system, which includes over 600 lead service lines that require immediate attention.

Michael England, Director of Public Works, explained that many of the water mains date back to the 1920s and are inadequate for current needs. A fire last January (2025) at the corner of Fulton and 3rd Street highlighted these deficiencies when old pipes made it difficult to put out the blaze. Firefighters had to use tanker trucks to pull water from the river after the hydrant system was overwhelmed.

The city has identified 21 projects that need to be completed over the next six to 20 years, with a total estimated cost of $51,390,000. Among these projects is the reconstruction of 7th Street in Centertown, scheduled to begin in 2027. To offset the costs for taxpayers, Grand Haven officials are actively pursuing state and federal grants.

England stated, "We really watch our options out there and put in for everything we can to help relieve the taxpayers." The city is awaiting a final report from the consultant group before planning specific project timelines and funding options.
