Dane Event: Greenland's Future To Be Discussed Today

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet with officials from Denmark today to discuss the status and future of Greenland. This comes one day after House Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla, introduced a bill that would allow President Trump  "to take such steps as may be necessary" to acquire Greenland and set it on the pathway of becoming part of the United States."

"We are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not, because if we don't do it Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we're not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor" Trump said last week during a Q&A with the media at the White House.

Stephen Helgesen is a former U.S. diplomat who now lives in Denmark, working as a political writer and commentator.

"If you're dealing with Donald Trump, and you try to go toe to toe with him, you'd better have something to back it up with" Helgesen said, "You have to have something to offer the man."

He believes that strengthening what is currently a weak relationship is the best place start, and hopefully the two sides can strike a deal.

"There are a lot of things that can be done, short of trying to take over the country by force, which I don't think would be in anybody's interests" Helgesen told KTRH, "Certainly not the USA's interests. We would not get any good will anywhere for doing that."

But President Trump continues to double down on the U.S. acquiring Greenland, saying that it's better for the U.S. to own it, not lease it.

Either way, Helgesen says that people of Greenland, and even Denmark where he now resides, love the U.S. and the American people.
