It’s mild now, but by this time Sunday morning the entire state could be in a deep freeze, and county officials are already hard at work preparing for the likely hazardous conditions to hit us.

Forecasts vary regarding when exactly the freezing temperatures and rain will hit the greater Houston and Harris County areas, but one thing is for sure: they’ll be here by Sunday morning.

County officials are warning residents to make preparations now, including Brian Murray with the Harris County Office of Emergency Management, who said: “The forecast is still a little unsettled, the timing may be a little bit off, but I think everyone will sleep better Friday night if they know things are taken care of before going into the weekend.”

Murray says the biggest concerns this weekend are going to be iced roads, and he warned would-be drivers: “The best advice I can give people is, wherever you are when you settle in for the evening on Saturday is where you need to plan on staying for the next 24–48 hours.”

He also advised that even though mass power outages aren’t expected, there could still be some localized outages, and residents should make sure they’re prepared for them—primarily by having multiple ways to access up-to-date information.
