SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An abandoned bakery in Somerville is transforming into affordable housing.

Patsy’s Pastry Shop has remained abandoned for over a decade since it closed its doors in 2015 but that’s soon to change. Somerville’s Ward 1 City Councilor Matt McLauglin said a new deal has been struck that will reenvision the space.

“It’s been abandoned for years, and we’re finally reaching a deal with the Somerville Community Corporation to purchase this land and make it 100 percent affordable housing,” McLaughlin said.

Located at 182 Broadway, the shop was known for creating all kinds of sweet treats throughout its nearly 50 years in business.

The former pastry shop won’t be the only space changed under the new deal. The building next to it, which is also abandoned, and another building located on the other side of it will also become affordable housing.

Although a deal has been reached to allow this to happen, Councilor McLauglin said it’s still going to take some time before a complete transformation can be made.

“It’s very early and there’s a bunch of financing that has to get into place, but this area is zoned for at least five stories of housing, he said.”

Councilor McLaughlin also said that turning spaces such as these into affordable housing has been a major focus of his time in office.

“We’re in an affordable housing crisis and that’s been my number one issue for many years, people are finally coming around to seeing that this is a national crisis, he said.”
