BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Bruins celebrated the century mark in style.
On Sunday afternoon, the Bruins beat the Montreal Canadiens at TD Garden 6-3 in what was considered the Centennial Game for the team. On Dec. 1, 1924, the Bruins played the Montreal Maroons in their first-ever game, which was broadcast on WBZ NewsRadio.
Ahead of the game, Canal Street played host to the Centennial Fan Fest and fans of all generations came out to mark the occasion. One woman was ready to carry on her father’s tradition of cheering from well above the ice.
“It’s actually very wonderful because my father grew up being a “gallery god” for many years and getting to continue the tradition of being a true Bruins fan and being able to be here at this Centennial Game is a gift,” said the woman.
Another fan said there was no way he would miss the game or another opportunity to wear his bear costume.
“Almost every game I go to I wear it. There’s some days I just don’t want the attention,” said the fan.
Inside the arena, the Bruins held pregame ceremonies featuring a number of Bruins legends. Former Bruins William O’Ree, Johnny Bucyk and Patrice Bergeron were all excited to be a part of the festivities.
“I’ve been blessed over the years, I really have. I’ve had good health and my family has been very supportive [and] every opportunity I get a chance to come to Boston I do,” said O’Ree.
“This celebration’s been unbelievable and it’s good for me to see a lot of the players I played with, and I played with a lot,” said Bucyk.
“You think about all the history that this franchise has had and the legends that have been through these doors. It’s very meaningful for me to be a part of the celebration, especially against Monreal and their history as well,” said Bergeron.
