BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Governor Maura Healey is weighing in on how state officials plan to respond ahead of major federal changes issued by the new White House administration.
In regards to immigration policies, Gov. Healey told WBZ NewsRadio on Saturday that everyone, regardless of lawful or unlawful residents, who commits crimes should be held accountable, adding that the reports of recent ICE arrests in Boston were “normal course of work by federal authorities, and it’s happening around the country.”
This comes as fear heightens within local immigrant communities and across the country as President Trump promised to crackdown on illegal migrants in sanctuary cities, such as Boston.
“There’s no doubt that some are experiencing a lot of fear right now,” Gov. Healey said. “Students will be protected of course, as they should be. Let’s let our little kids and older learners learn in peace.”
Meanwhile, local advocacy groups are urging people to be educated on migrant rights ahead of any potential raids.
Elizabeth Sweet, CEO of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA), told WBZ NewsRadio earlier this week they have been pushing on Beacon Hill to pass bills to further protect and aid those who might be impacted.
“The reality is none of us really know where ICE is going to prioritize their enforcement,” Sweet said.
Additionally, Gov. Healey reassured residents that she will continue to fight for women’s health care in the Bay State as “abortion remains safe, legal, and accessible here in Massachusetts and our providers are also protected.”
“I think as governor I’m just trying to lead,” she continued. “If there comes a time where somebody hurts that [right]…, as governor, I will stand up for the rights of folks here in our state.”
