MCINTOSH COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) - A dock on Sapelo Island collapsed on Saturday afternoon, according to the Mcintosh County Sheriff's Department (MCSD), leaving multiple people in the water.
The MCSD currently has not confirmed if there were any deaths or injuries from the incident.
The Currentreports an unknown number of people are reported dead and others missing after the dock collapse during the annual Cultural Day celebration.
One witness said her brother was on the island at the Cultural Day celebration when the dock collapsed and plunged people into the water.
Another witness said two hearse vehicles made their way to the Meridian dock in the county after the incident.
The McIntosh County Fire Department, the McIntosh Sheriff’s Department, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources — which runs the ferry between Sapelo and the mainland twice daily — and the U.S. Coast Guard were using boats and helicopters in search and rescue efforts. Emergency medical crews are currently on scene.
As of 6 p.m., the number of injuries or possible fatalities had not been confirmed.
