SAPELO ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) — A Superior Court Judge granted an injunction against a controversial ordinance, effectively stopping new vacation homes from being built until the case goes before the Georgia Supreme Court.
The ordinance would allow for homes that are twice the size of the original zoning requirements to be built in McIntosh County. People have been fighting against the ordinance for around 14 months, and it isn't over yet.
Senior Judge Gary McCorvey's ruling blocked building permits larger than 1,400 feet, which was the previous limit, to be given out.
Attorneys for the Hogg Hammock community are filing a motion to resume with a special referendum election where the ordinance could be voted on by the community.
Sapelo Island is home to the last intact Gullah Geechee community on the coast. The Gullah Geechee community are direct slave descendants.
