LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Local leaders in Lynn celebrated the groundbreaking in the construction of a new affordable housing project on Friday.
The Solimine House will be a new 100 percent affordable housing unit dedicated to senior residents. This project has been five years in the making after Union Hospital, the city’s only hospital, closed down in 2020.
“That loss has been turned into the opportunity that we see here to rethink how we take care of our older adults," Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson told WBZ NewsRadio.
The development is spearheaded by 2Life Communities, a local organization that helps build affordable and accessible living facilities to aging adults, which aims to bring 150 affordable units to Lynn's senior population.
“We’ve been very concentrated closer to Boston, so this is really meaningful for us,” 2Life Communities President Lizbeth Heyer said, adding that construction will take about two years to complete.
2Life is also behind another project in Lynn called the 19 Porter Street Redevelopment, which will bring another 114 affordable senior apartments.
