LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Lynn is hoping to catch criminals red-handed with a new surveillance system.

There will soon be security cameras installed in areas of Lynn where high crime and traffic patterns have been identified. There will be 35 cameras in fixed positions and two portable units that can be deployed where needed, including in areas where public dumping is an issue.

“These are going to be public cameras capturing public spaces. It’s going to be just video, not sound, and we appreciate this opportunity,” said Nicholson.

Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson said the cameras will be visible, but anything they capture will have a short shelf life.

“The videos aren’t going to be monitored live by anyone. They will only be looked at in response to specific incidents or inquiries. It is a public record, so it’s available under the Freedom of Information Act, [but] they’re only going to be stored for 30 days,” said Nicholson.

Nicholson said the new security system is thanks to a $200,000 grant obtained through the Massachusetts Gaming Commission Community Mitigation Fund.
