MBTA Launches Contactless Payment System On Buses, Trolleys, And Subways

 MALDEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —  The MBTA launched a new contactless payment system on Thursday on buses, trolleys, and at subway stations.  

The “Tap to Ride” system was designed to allow riders to navigate the T without the purchase of a physical ticket or reloading a CharlieCard. Riders can now tap their credit or debit cards, phone, or watch with a mobile wallet to pay for a ride.

Some riders, however, are not as enthusiastic about the new system and prefer to use their CharlieCard until they see how the tap system turns out.  

“If I run into problems than I guess I’ll have to switch over [but] if not, I’ll stay with the CharlieCard,” said one Orange Line commuter. 

“I get my CharlieCard from my job, so it works like 90% of the time,” another commuter said. 

The MBTA said that riders can still pay with cash, or use monthly or weekly passes, or passes provided by a school or employer. Tap to Ride is currently not available on the Commuter Rail and MBTA ferries.
