BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A major backup on the Massachusetts Turnpike Friday morning after an electric vehicle caught on fire.

Hundreds of cars were stuck on I-90 westbound near Fenway amid the busy morning commute.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) shut down all lanes on I-90 westbound at mile marker 133. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and take alternative routes.

According to State Police, Boston Fire and first responders were on scene shortly after 7 a.m. to divert traffic, just beyond the Prudential Tunnel.

Roads reopened shortly after 9 a.m.

State Police also responded to a fatal crash overnight near the Sumner Tunnel where the driver later died at the hospital.

The driver’s identity was not released, and the crash remains under investigation.
