BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Milton teen and her family spent their Sunday morning dropping off thousands of socks at the St. Francis House in Chinatown.

Sophia Casini has upheld her holiday tradition of donating socks to local homeless shelters for 11 years.

"It was one of the most needed things in the shelter that kept people warm and just comfortable," Sophia said.

It all started when she did a sock drive in kindergarten, and wanted to keep that momentum going. Now she's donated over 31,000 pairs of socks, including 4,800 this year alone. Her mom, Rachel, says Sophia got the idea when she was only four.

"She was going to a school at the time that was doing multiple drives -- canned food drives, sock drives. And after the sock drive ended, she said that she wanted to continue doing a sock drive because there are so many people that need it, and she just wanted to be able to facilitate that for more people," Rachel said.

And while shelters like the St. Francis House get plenty of donations of coats and other clothes, donation processor Iesha Strickland says socks are more important than ever during this hectic time of year.

"It's gonna be a little busy, but that's what we do, so it's nothing that we complain about. We just buckle down, and we get it through for our clients," Strickland said.
