BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — New England Aquarium has chosen the nurse shark to be the model for their ice sculpture for the Waterfront Ice Sculpture Stroll.
Sculptor Don Chapelle was brought back for the project after last year’s sea turtle ice art piece he did for the aquarium. The public was able to watch as the sculpting was done on the aquarium front plaza on Tuesday.
This piece was modeled after Cirri, a nurse shark that can be found at New England Aquarium. The sculpture will be put on display at Central Wharf on New Year’s Eve for Boston Harbor Now’s annual art sightseeing walk.
Chappelle said he was supposed to do the work Monday, but the warm weather them to push the carving to the next day.

The final piece will be 16-feet wide, eight-feet tall, around seven tons and featuring the nurse shark, two rays, fish and a coral reef.
Senior Aquarist for the Giant Ocean Tank team Lindsey Phenix said she was thrilled by the decision to base the sculpture of Cirri.
“It looks great; I’m probably a little biased, I’m really excited about this theme being a nurse shark and she’s awesome,” Phenix said. “I think (Cirri) would be thrilled, it looks beautiful and I think she would be really excited to be featured.”
