NEWTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Dozens of people took advantage of the deep freeze Sunday to skate over the frozen waters of Auburndale Cove in Newton.
Skaters told WBZ that winters in Greater Boston haven't been cold enough for this patch of river to freeze over for the past couple years. This year’s cold temperatures finally brought back this beloved community gem for residents, especially children.
“I haven’t been skating on this river since we moved here in 2019,” one told WBZ NewsRadio.
People of all ages cleared snow off giant rectangles of the ice and played several hockey games at once.
“There’s not much to do in the winter in Boston, so getting out and playing on ice brings me back to my childhood a lot," one local said.
Auburndale Cove has more infrastructure than most pond skating you might find in Greater Boston, including a heated changing area and bathrooms. Newton considers it a public outdoor skating rink, with city officials checking the ice thickness regularly.
Skating is open Monday – Friday 2 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. and 9 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. on weekends, as long as the ice stays safely frozen.
