PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Dog owners are taking extra precautions on the South Shore, as officials continue to sound the alarm over bird flu concerns.

Dozens of birds were recently found dead at the Billington Sea Pond in Plymouth, Mass., with officials believing bird flu was to blame. Warning signs have been posted around the town, asking residents to keep their distance and report any dead birds they come across.

MassWildlife officials have returned to the pond for assessment multiple times in the past week. Dog owners Pam and Jennifer are taking the advice from town officials to keep their dogs on leashes.

“It’s scary because you can’t protect them from everything, right?” said Jennifer. “You have to be just more aware of what your dogs might get into.”

“I don’t let my dogs off leash personally because of things like this,” said Pam.

Bird flu concerns are also having an impact in Brockton, Mass., where officials were forced to close D.W. Field Park on Friday. In Hudson, Mass., officials urged residents to “remain cautious” after removing two dead birds near Bruces Pond on Saturday.

Those who encounter any dead birds can report the sightings to MassWildlife.
