BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Union workers held an event for the residents of Pine Street Inn, the largest homeless shelter in New England.

Members of Iron Workers Local 7 gave out pie and beverages to those staying at the shelter.

They also held bingo games, with the winners receiving gift cards as prizes.

Union president Frank Murray talked about how they hope the event brings some happiness to the Pine Street residents this holiday season.

“We were here at the Pine Street Inn to help the folks that come in here on a daily basis put a smile on their face throughout the holiday season,” said Murray.

He acknowledged that this time of year can be difficult for many, and he hoped an event like this would make holidays easier for many.

“The seasons are changing and things are always going to be hard around the holidays when it's supposed to be a positive time,” said Frank. “It’s usually easier for people to have a smile on their face when it’s good food around, good people around. Union folks are good people.”

This annual event was organized by the union's NEXT committee, a group of younger iron workers who engage in charitable events across the city all year round.
