The Geek Freak of the Week Is Here and It's Comic-Con Weekend!

*** updated: 7/25/21 at 9:52pm ***

Welcome geeks, nerds, dorks, and everything in between. The holy grail of events has arrived with COMIC-CON WEEKEND! Well, sort of...it's another "at-home" experience with many panels being pre-taped and loaded up on YouTube. Geek and tech companies such as IGN will not be doing exclusive coverage as they have in the past. Is that the new trend or just because this year it's at home again? Regardless of what we get this weekend be sure to check back here for any important updates or news that might drop.

Now, let's geek out!

Batgirl Begins

Leslie Grace has been tapped by DC and Warner Bros to put on the cowl and become the next Amber Knight of Gotham City. This will mark the first time that Barbara Gordon and Batgirl will appear in the DCEU AND the first time the character gets her own stand-alone film.

Batgirl has been portrayed several times on both TV and film. Yvonne Craig portrayed her in the Adam West Batman series and Alicia Silverstone took up the mantle in the forgotten film of Batman & Robin. In the world of animation, voice actor Tara Strong is best known for bringing the character to life in the DC Animated Universe of Batman: Animated Series and reprised the role in the stand-alone film Batman: The Killing Joke.

This is the second announcement regarding the character's live-action portrayal. Savannah Welch is set to appear in the third season of HBO Max's Titans as Commissioner Barbara Gordan however she has retired as the Amber Knight is confined to a wheelchair, setting up her life as the all-knowing tech crime fighter, Oracle.

Batgirl is set to arrive on HBO Max sometime by 2023 and will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

Look Out For Dunes

No, you aren't seeing things. There is a new Dune trailer out and we have a release date. The long-awaited cult following of the popular sci-fi drama is set to arrive in theaters on October 22, 2021, with a simultaneous release on Warner Bros streaming service HBO Max that will last for 30 days.

Let's Be Honest

Black Widow is still in theaters and on Disney+ but has lost to Space Jam 2: A New Legacy. What?! HOW?! While we ponder that here's the honest trailer.

Who Picked This Team?

Since it's Comic-con (at home) weekend, DC and Warner Bros have released this quick and exclusive clip from James Gunn's THE Suicide Squad set to release in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th. If you were to assemble a team of villains and prisoners, would you want The Detachable Kid on your side? Harley's reaction might sum that up for us all.

Batman, meet The Roman. The Roman, meet Batman.

Well, sort of. This meet is way before either one gets their respective titles. Check out this clip from Batman: The Long Halloween, Part 2 which arrives July 27th on digital and Blu-ray on August 10th.

A New Superman Is Coming To Town

Michael B. Jordan and his production company, Outlier Society, are ready to take on the mantle of the Man of Steel. No, not as Clark Kent or Kal-El but as Val-Zod, the son of Krypton set in the Earth-2 storylines. What's interesting about the distinction of Earth-2 is that Robert Pattinson's The Batman is designated in that universe. Could we see these two team up?

The limited series is set to premiere exclusively on HBO Max.

The Doctor Is In

Season 13....or series 13 (damn Brits and their odd naming of things) of Doctor Who is here with Jodie Whittaker returning as the Thirteenth Doctor.

Don't forget to check out the latest issue of the Geek Freak of the Week Podcast. Available on the iHeart Radio app. Happy Comic-Con weekend!
